This spring Solebury School Biology students will design, build and grow some vertical gardens. In doing this, they will learn the role of genetics, evolution, environmental concerns and human health in their own lives and in the development of responsible and sustainable agricultural practices. Students will document their projects and their leanring on this blog.

Overview of our vertical garden- Susie, Ian, Mike & Charlotte
For our vertical garden, we originally planned to build a free standing T-shaped structure that would balance plants like a mobile. We did not have our material list in time for Jon to go to Home Depot and get what we wanted but in the end it worked out. Jon had left over supplies so now we are going to build a different free standing structure. It is going to be based on an 8 foot tall wooden post that will have holes drilled into the side. These holes will house tubing that will come out the side and plants will be hanged on them. Each tube pole will be coming out a different direction and also be a different size for uniqueness and variety.

Initial Designs
Project Overview
-This project is an experiment in gardening that we can use to build an interesting and cooperative structure that can contain a series of plants.
-Because this is a chance to design and build something that is entirely our own and get experience with both gardening and construction.
-We will be building the equivalent of a bunk bed with a plant bed for basil being supported over a plant bed for lettuce.
Our Garden
-Our bunk bed will be four feet long and four feet high overall. There will be 2 feet between each bed and the beds themselves will be one foot tall each.
-Diagrams thus far:
