This spring Solebury School Biology students will design, build and grow some vertical gardens. In doing this, they will learn the role of genetics, evolution, environmental concerns and human health in their own lives and in the development of responsible and sustainable agricultural practices. Students will document their projects and their leanring on this blog.

In our group, we wanted to grow different kinds of plants so we decided on the following:
-Snow Peas
they are a vegetables and the best time to grow them is early spring. It best grows in temperatures around 70 degrees. Snow peas take about 60 days from sowing to harvest.
-Honeysuckles
Honeysuckles do best in full sunlight but are also capable of growing in partial shade as well. They are able to start growing in early spring.
-Blackberries
Blackberries take about 40 days to grow from sowing to harvesting. They are best to be planted in the spring and grow best in full sunlight.

Thus we will want 10 leaf lettuce seeds, and 5 snap pea seeds.
-Temperature Requirements
Between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
-Time for Sowing and Harvest
Lettuce requires 4 to 6 weeks planted inside before transplanted to our vertical garden. The peas should be sowed outdoors.

George, Kevin, Jenifer, Jack Vertical Garden
Overview: For our biology lab, our group is creating a vertical garden using a variety of herbs, vegetables and flowers. None of the members in our group has gardening experience. Thus, we will use this oppurtunity to learn gardening skills, and observe plant growth. By growing the plants we see or eat daily, we will learn to cherish the gardeners and farmers. We will be closer to the nature. We expect to see our dream garden by late May.
Our idea is to plant our fruit and vegetables on and around a vertical "Jon" design shelf with grape, watermelon or tomato, and spinach. Grape cirrus would be grown on the wooden structure. Spinach would be grown on the ground, and watermelon would be grown somewhere on the structure.
Our garden would be a round area with the sign "JON" in the middle of the garden. We would plant some green vegetable such as spinach or cilantro or broccoli. We would set up a rectangular container on the structure and plant hot pepper or flowers on it. Furthermore, we would grow some cirrus on the structure to make the entire garden more colorful and interesting.

Overview of the project:
We will use a pallet as a foundation to which we will attach planters. We will plant plants in the planters and attach the planters one over the other onto the pallet.
Overview of plants:
We have decided to plant only 4 varieties: peas, lavender, basil, and radishes.
Peas need to be planted 2 inches into the soil, 6 inches apart from each other, they take 1 to 2 weeks for seedlings to sprout, and we can harvest them in 70 days.
Lavender should be planted right atop the surface, need to be a foot apart, seedlings show in 2 to 4 weeks, and in 90 days will be ready to harvest.
Basil needs to be 1/4 of an inch in the grown and a foot apart, seedlings should sprout up between 1 and 2 weeks of planting, and after 2 or 3 months they should be ready to harvest.
Radishes should be planted near a half and inch in the soil and 2 inches apart, seedlings sprout in about a week, and the radishes should be ready to harvest in 22 days.

We want to build a hut like structure and hang PVC tubes down from it in a vertical form and put holes in their sides and have them grow that way. Alternatively we could also just put a few of them in the ground and fill them with soil.
